Ancient Societies Workshop

As the study of history has developed in the modern era, historians have increasingly come to recognize the value of interdisciplinary inquiry, bringing methodologies from fields as diverse as sociology, gender studies, and economics to bear on the study of ancient societies. The Ancient Societies Workshop provides a forum for historians from a range of disciplines to discuss topics of common interest. The focus for 2008-2009 will be on the epigraphic habits of the ancient Mediterranean. The cultures of the ancient world displayed an astonishing versatility in the creation of monuments with inscribed texts in permanent media. Traditionally studied in modern editions that rehearse their textual content alone, in recent scholarship they have begun to be understood in a wide array of disciplinary perspectives. We hope to foster conversation among the participants in this distinct methodological tradition.

Unless otherwise noted in the schedule, workshops take place on alternate Tuesdays at 3:30pm in Classics 26.
