Fall Schedule Change

Our November 22 speaker has changed. Christian Thomsen will be presenting his paper, “Corporate Endorsement – Private Associations and Public Figures in Hellenistic Rhodes.”

Emily Wilson’s talk, “Religion and the glyptic iconography of the Aramaic tablets in the Persepolis Fortification Archive,” will now take place in the winter quarter.

The updated Fall Schedule is as follows:

October 18th: Cliff Ando, “Legal Pluralism and Legal Change in the Roman Empire”

October 25th: David Schloen, “Economy and Society in Ugarit, a Late Bronze Age Kingdom on the Syrian Coast”

November 8th: Jacobo Myerston, “The Derveni Papyrus and Akkadian Commentaries”

November 15th: Brian Muhs, “Literacy, Law and the Economy in Ancient Egypt”

November 22nd: Christian Thomsen, “Corporate Endorsement – Private Associations and Public Figures in Hellenistic Rhodes”

November 29th: Paul Keen, “Towards the Koinon Kyprion: Cypriot Cities in the Ptolemaic Empire”

October 18th: Cliff Ando, “Legal Pluralism and Legal Change in the Roman Empire,” with Pre-circulated Paper

The first workshop of this quarter will take a different format than Ancient Societies has traditionally used. Cliff Ando is pre-circulating his paper and asks that workshop participants come prepared with questions and comments on the text. The speaker will open with a brief overview of his paper, but the majority of the session will consist of discussion between speaker and audience. We hope to see you there!
