Julian Dashper is regarded as one of New Zealand's most internationally well-known contemporary artists. In 2001, he was awarded a senior Fulbright Fellowship to work as an Artist in Residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas. Dashper's work explores the histories, theories, and various popularizations of abstraction, conceptualism, and minimalism and addresses their functions as working methodologies; his work has also consistently addressed topics related to New Zealand's global positioning - specifically how the country receives and disseminates visual information. Dashper's use of various forms has resulted in a diverse body of work: paintings, photographs of paintings, modified found objects, and limited edition CS and 12" polycarbonate recordings of impromptu performances. We are very pleased to begin this quarter with a workshop during which Julian will present his work and lead a discussion of his practice.
