Matthew Metzger is interested in paint as a medium for engendering alternate
modes of perception. With the viewer’s investment in looking and questioning
as his primary starting point, Matthew’s renderings of familiar domestic and
industrial objects work to subdue the “artist’s hand” while taking into
consideration the medium’s dependency upon labor in a society that
increasingly consumes information rather than the hand made object. Given the
current situation of paint, it is essential for Matthew that the language and
function of the painted object now expedite its perceptual capacities to a
greater degree.
