THE
EARLY
MODERN
WORKSHOP

THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO

The Early Modern Workshop focuses on every aspect of the early modern experience, circa 1400 - 1800.  It encompasses the European and Mediterranean worlds, the Middle East including the Ottoman Empire, and New World colonial societies and their governments, including colonial North America.  There are more connections among these widely-strewn contexts than meet the eye, so if you are interested in one, you may find exposure to another surprising and rewarding.

While the workshop's approach is historical, we actively encourage participants who work on any aspect of the areas and the period covered.  Topics presented frequently include matters of religion, political institutions and law, political theory, science, economics, literature, and the republic of letters.

Most sessions discuss pre-circulated papers presented by graduate students, faculty or invited visitors.  Papers can be obtained before the Workshop from the Coordinators by email (see below), but interested people can just attend as well.  You can also receive regular announcements about the Workshop through our email list.
