Autumn 2014 Schedule

Unless otherwise notes, all meetings take place Thursday at 4:30pm in Foster 305 and are followed by a small reception.

Texts to be read in advance are posted under the “Workshop Documents” tab one week prior to our meeting. All documents are password-protected. The password is circulated via the listserv.

 

Thursday, October 2: Close reading of selections from Johann Wolfgang Goethe and Friedrich Schiller’s correspondence, led by Carly Lane and Joseph Simmons.

Thursday, October 16: Roger Pouivet, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Lorraine, Director of the Laboratoire d’Histoire des Sciences et de Philosophie – Archives Henri-Poincaré, and French Editor of the European Journal for Philosophy of Religion, “Modal Aesthetics”

Thursday, October 30 : Philip Sugg, PhD student in Social Thought at the University of Chicago, “The Movement from Past to Future in George Eliot’s ‘Daniel Deronda’”

Thursday, November 13: Isabela Ferreira, PhD student in Social Thought at the University of Chicago, “Faustian Nihilism and its Aesthetic Cure”

Thursday, December 4: David Wellbery, LeRoy T. and Margaret Deffenbaugh Carlson University Professor in the Department of Germanic Studies, Comparative Literature, Committee on Social Thought, and the College; Chair of the Department of Germanic Studies, “Some Views of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche on Aesthetics”
