The Medieval Studies Workshop, together with the Late-Antiquity and Byzantium workshop, is delighted to invite you to our next meeting, Friday April 13, at 12pm in Cochrane-Woods Art Center, Room 152.

Dr. Heather Badamo, Harper-Schmidt Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Art History, will talk about “Epiphany and Representation at the Frontier: Envisioning Warrior Saints in Medieval Egypt and the Levant.”

This session will follow the format of a lecture without pre-circulated paper or respondent.

Refreshments will be served, and you are welcome to bring your lunch.

The Workshop on Late Antiquity and Byzantium will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 4:30pm in the Cochrane-Woods Art Center (5540 S Greenwood Ave) in room 152.

Joseph Steineger, Ph.D. Candidate in the Divinity School at the University of Chicago, will present his paper entitled: “Simplicity in Gregory Palamas and Thomas Aquinas.”

As an additional note, please be aware that the Workshop on Late Antiquity and Byzantium is accepting proposals for presentations to take place in the Winter and Spring Quarters.  Interested individuals should send a brief description of their proposed presentation to Nathan Leidholm (nleidholm@uchicago.edu).

Norman Golb, Ludwig Rosenberger Professor of Jewish History and Civilization in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Oriental Institute, and the College, will be presenting his paper entitled “The Rabbinic Master Jacob Tam and events of the Second Crusade at Reims.”

Walter E. Kaegi, Professor of History at the University of Chicago, will present his
paper entitled “Reassessing Arnold J. Toynbee, Historian of Byzantium: With an
additional comment from William H. McNeill.”
