About & Contact

The Rhetoric & Poetics Workshop is a longstanding, vibrant forum for scholars of ancient literature to present and discuss their ongoing projects. As a workshop and space for scholarly exploration and discovery, Rhetoric & Poetics is an arena for rigorous philological interpretation of ancient texts, as well as for consideration of the resonances of those texts and the reception of the ancient world in subsequent literature, art, and history. We encourage theoretical and cross-disciplinary approaches to the study of ancient texts and are proud to support new and experimental approaches to the field.

We aim to offer a variety of topics for discussion, and we draw attendees from the Divinity School, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, the Committee on Social Thought, History, and Art History in addition to Classics. We regularly invite distinguished faculty and young scholars from outside of Chicago to present at the workshop and contribute to our lively community.

Rhetoric & Poetics meets several times each quarter on Thursdays at 3:30 PM in Classics 21, unless otherwise noted.
