Mon. Jan. 12th 4:30-6PM, Sascha Förster (Pre-Doctorial Fellow, Northwestern University), “Redeveloping Zeitgeist: Architecture and Memory within the National Theatre London”

Please join the Theater and Performance Studies Workshop for Sascha Forster’s paper “Redeveloping Zeitgeist: Architecture and Memory within the National Theatre London.” In this paper, Sascha Förster aims to develop a different understanding of the German term Zeitgeist by considering spectrality studies and Marvin Carlson’ concept of ghosting. Zeitgeist will be used to analyze the 1990s and current redevelopments of the South Bank building of the National Theatre in London. In a third step, Förster will introduce the term Fundus to ‘locate’ Diana Taylor’s and Tracy C. Davis’ theories of repertoire.

Sascha Förster is a PhD Candidate in Theatre and Media Culture at the University of Cologne. His research is funded by the SNSF research project The Interior: Art, Space, and Performance (Early Modern to Postmodern), hosted by the University of Bern. In the academic year 2014/5, he is a Pre-Doctoral Fellow at Northwestern University. His dissertation Zeitgeist and the Scenes of Imagination aims for a theatre historiographical understanding of the term Zeitgeist which will be used to analyze spatial phenomena in the 20th and 21st century.

There will be a reception following Sascha’s talk with graduate students from the Department of Performance Studies at Northwestern University.

Location: Logan Seminar Terrace Room 801
